hey there,

summer is almost over and it’s time to take a look back …. (already).
first of all i’m back to use english for my blog because i realized, there’ve been quite a few visitors from outside germany. thanks everyone!

it seems long ago but my album ‘kurz unter land’ actually came out only 10 weeks ago. that sounds like yesterday, right? thanks to everybody who listened to it or left a comment on soundcloud. special thanks to those who bought a copy! you are great!

there’ll be a few shows around germany (see the calendar for more info) this august before i’ll combine forces again with my buddy mredit to play the visionsonic2010 in paris. i’m totally excited!!!

as for what i did with the past ten weeks, i used the time to get more into sound design. i just uploaded a first soundreel to vimeo. i hope you enjoy it:

i’ll try to update this blog more regularly through fall and winter to give you something to read while listening to ‘kurz unter land’

vor drei wochen erschien ‘kurz unter land’ auf cd und vor zwei wochen in digitaler form. yes!!
mein label Petite:Unique Records gewährt heute einen einblick in die entstehungsgeschichte der scheibe. genauer gesagt, in die produktion des digipack. sozusagen der videobeweis für “handgemacht” …

mittlerweile lohnt es sich schon fast, die stunden zu zählen, die der release von ‘kurz unter land’ noch entfernt ist.
um die wartezeit etwas zu verkürzen, will ich hier mal schnell die bisherigen rezensionen zusammenfassen. zu meiner freude, sind alle positiv ausgefallen

die heiße phase hat begonnen: in drei wochen ist record release von ‘kurz unter land’ …

gerade steht die vorbereitung des live-sets für die record-release-party (siehe petite:uniques post) und die juni-tour mit mredit auf dem programm.

gleich neben diesem punkt steht die arbeit am einem neuen track auf der agenda. dieser wird bestandteil der special-limited-box (50 exemplare) von ‘kurz unter land’ und nirgends sonst zu hören sein … aber mehr dazu gibt es bald auf petite:unique zu lesen.

on wednesday the 14th of april at exactly one minute after 11:59pm, the track ‘pioneer’ vanished from the net and, thus, from my last post (“This track is currently not available”). all that is left is an empty player and a little file on my harddrive and hopefully on yours too.

you will not hear this track again. at least not as it has been online for the first 14 days of april. and you won’t hear it on my upcoming release which is on its way to the digital distributor right now. i’m so looking forward seeing it on all the different plattforms, yeehaw!

however, the disappearance of ‘pioneer’ marked the introduction of a new website-design. i went for this even more minimal theme than the old one. i hope you like it and enjoy checking out the new pages …

during the next weeks i’ll be busy preparing a live-set for the shows i’ll be doing throughout june with my dear friend mredit (see the calender for confirmed dates + i’ll be posting more as they come in).

that’s that so far. hope to see you guys in june or earlier (in leipzig…).

darüber hinaus sind mittlerweile alle teile für das anstehende album angekommen und werden derzeit zusammengesetzt in feinster heim- und handarbeit. die ersten promo-exemplare sind bereits auf dem weg und demnächst wird es einige fotos geben, um eure vorfreude etwas zu steigern. aber soviel kann ich schon mal verraten: es sieht alles sehr schön aus!

dear all,
the following blog-post will be in german language. for all of you who feel more comfortable with english, please leave a note in the comments.
for all of you who feel more comfortable with german, there you go:

sie sind da! heute morgen klingelte der ups-mann und hatte ein paket von 5,4 kg im arm. der inhalt: 300 frisch gepresste udosson-cds!!!! yay! da wird man doch gerne in seinem tagwerk unterbrochen.
es ist echt super, die erste eigene, professionell gepresste cd in händen zu halten! sehr zu empfehlen!
die kommenden wochen werden nun von verpackungsarbeit geprägt sein. da die cd in zwei verschiedenen limitierten auflagen zu haben sein wird, wird diese aktion einige zeit in anspruch nehmen. aber wie cool wird das erst, wenn die 300 scheiben dann ordnungsgemäß verpackt sind …
sobald sich diesbezüglich neuigkeiten ergeben, werden die natürlich sofort hier verbreitet.
jetzt heißt es aber erstmal cds zählen, ob auch wirklich 300 drin sind

getting things done and wrapped up

it has been less than two weeks since the last post, yet i already have some news to share again.
as mentioned in the last post, i’m done with mixing and mastering. in fact, the cd is beeing pressed as we speak. so in a few days i’ll have the first professionaly manufactured udosson-album in my hands. totally cool and exciting!
for the last one and a half weeks i was busy doing the artwork and refining the packaging-ideas for the album. as my label Petite:Unique Records is a fan of unique solutions when it comes to merchandise and packaging, we will do 2 different packagings for the album, one handmade super-limited box and one minimalist version. so, there is twice as much to think about. the artwork phase has reached the final stage now, tho, and most of it is ready to be printed.
as a few of you might like pictures here is a sneak peak at the cover:

so that’s that for now. i’ll certainly drop a line or two in here again once the records arrive. stay tuned and see you …
by the way, i’m looking for gigs. so if you have any suggestions leave a comment.

p.s.: you might have realised the change of terms used in this post. the bespoke “ep” has been growing and growing to a length of almost 60 minutes during the process. therefore, the “ep” is henceforth known as the “album” around here.

let your ears tell you what to do – things i’ve learned today

whatever you do you’ll never stop learning. even when you’re only reminded of something you have learned before. that happened to me during last week’s audio editing sessions.
on the internet you can find a whole lot of tutorials concerning mixing, mastering and audio production in general. that is fantastic and i’m kind of a fan of such tuts. however, there are some strings attached to those things which i want to point out once more.
in most tutorials you’ll find the note ‘this is not a general rule’ in one form or another. that seems quite obvious and right but if you are looking for information, you tend to overread or forget that.
now here comes the point: you shall not forget this!!!
there are tons of different styles of music and all of them have different needs, soundwise … actually every song has it’s own needs. what works for one does not necessarily work for others. and most importantly, your songs are your songs. which is why you know how they need to sound and no one else! one of the best sentences concerning this matter is by joe gilder. in his video tutorial on EQ (which is great and really worth watching, btw) he said: “… we’re doing audio. so there is no rules per se. … just let your ears tell you what to do.”
this really helped me out last week as i felt like reaching a dead end during my work on the new tracks. nothing seemed to sound just right at all. and why was that? well, i read some tutorials and sticked to what they suggested … too closely as it turned out … i learned that lesson the hard way
however, as i’m writing this, i have a bunch of final mixdowns on my harddrive. and they sound just as i want them to … all according to the plan!
