mixed …

i guess, today was actually the last of a series of long days of finalising the mixes of my new tracks. and you are right in guessing that i spent the whole day in my room (that’s what i like to call my cosy studio). although i really like working in my studio, sometimes there are clearly some things that can be slightly annoying. for example, the room tends to cool down rather quickly. nice in summer – not so nice in winter. and the result of this is:

in general, tho, i really like winter. it’s totally inspiring … cold, silent and dim outside, warm and comfortable inside. very nice. however, when your room is poorly isolated and you have to wait for the heating to kick in you end up sitting at your desk with your gloves on.

still, the good news is that after editing automations, cleaning up frequency bands and doing all the other stuff, i’m pretty confident that the mixing is done. that doesn’t mean it’s all over tho … mastering is the name of the game. a lot has been written about mastering and there are as many opinions about whether you can do that yourself or not as there are audio-production-related blogs out there. well, it seems that i’m one of those who believe you can. just as that politician once said: yes, we can!

january is almost gone and the deadline for the final mix of this years ep is coming to an end. and as i promised before, here is an update on how things develop.
i’ve been working for the last 7 hours non stop on the new tracks now and it’s funny how certain effects keep coming back ;) during the process. for example, the use of reverb to get certain instruments in a distance or to give them some space in the mix. especially if the unit offers the possibility to apply the effect on certain frequencies. i have never been a big fan of reverb but as it turns out it’s a pretty handy device once you got the hang of it. it does take some time though and some reading, if you prefer the academic type of learning or some experimenting, if you prefer learning by doing.

reverb

another thing i started doing today is preparing an info-sheet for each track and its parts. i figured this could come in handy for quickly taking notes of things that still need to be done/ changed. i used to do this before but the notes were completely random and there was no real system to it. this ended up in loads of notes scattered allover the place …

audition session #1

today i was busy deciding on wich tracks to put on the ep planned for 2010 … it’s a hard thing to do especially when you have a whole lot of sketches. after listening and editing all afternoon i think i definetly go with this one:

so what do you think? please keep in mind that this is a rough mix and not the final version ;)
